14 International House Times In Memory 1930's Alumni 1940's Alumni Lou Ann Moynihan Hellmers December 31, 2014 Lou Ann Moynihan Hellmers was born in San Mateo, California and lived her early childhood on the family ranch in Dixon, California. Later she moved with her mother and two brothers to Priest Station near Yosemite National Park. Lou Ann met Henry Hellmers (IH 1941-42) at I-House while both attended UC Berkeley. After marrying in 1945, the two eventually settled in Pasadena in 1950. Lou Ann served as a teacher in the Pasadena school system.George Ho (IH 1937-38) orndike "orn" Saville, Jr. November 5, 2014 orn met his future wife, Janet Foster, over a bridge table in I-House. After he received an M.S. in Civil Engineering in 1949, the two married and relocated to Washington, D.C., where orn began his career as a hydraulic engineer with the Beach Erosion Board and Coastal Engineering Research Center, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and ended as Technical Director. From stories told at home, Janet and orn's three children have grown up knowing more about the fun times and engaging residents of I-House than the educational excellence of UC Berkeley. Mary Frances Norman March 22, 2015 Mary Frances attended Randolph-Macon and Pomona colleges, and studied abroad in Switzerland before obtaining her Masters Degree in French Literature at UC Berkeley. She went on to work at the state department in Washington, DC. Married to Winston Norman, an ad agency executive in 1954, the couple resided in San Francisco, having one son. She was widowed in 1974 and moved to Berkeley in 1981. She travelled the world extensively with friends, was an avid potter, harpist and docent, among many other cultural and artistic pursuits. Mary Frances was an intellectual and liberal Renaissance woman whose easy-going manner touched all who knew her. Joan Safarian September 11, 2014 Joan received an M.A. in Social Work at UC Berkeley in 1950. She and her husband Ed (IH 1946-50) lived mainly in Toronto where Ed was a Professor of Economics and where they had four children. Joan worked in various social agencies and Universities but mainly as a medical social worker at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. She never forgot the great friends and wonderful years at I-House. She was active in a number of organizations which emphasized peace, support for one another, and education. 1960's Alumni Maurice Tauber October 6, 2014 Maurice came to UC Berkeley and earned his Ph.D. ('66) in entomology. Both he and his future wife, Catherine (Kady) Toschi (B.S., M.S., Ph.D. '62, '64, '68) lived at I-House before moving to Cornell University in 1966 where Maurice was a faculty member for 34 years and served as Chair of the Department of Entomology. After retiring from Cornell, Maurice and Kady returned to California where they continued their research in association with UC Davis. Maurice was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Entomological Society of Canada, and the California Academy of Sciences. Maurice is survived by his wife, son Paul, son Michael (Ph.D. UCB'02; IH 1992-93), daughter Agatha, and three grandchildren. Mary "Ann" Foley Scheuring October 20, 2014 Ann was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to attend UC Berkeley, where she earned a Master's Degree in English. In 1961 she married David George Scheuring, with whom she had four children. Ann worked as an editor and writer at UC Davis for more than 20 years, producing a number of books including Abundant Harvest: e History of the University of California, Davis. I-House alumna Clair Haag (IH 1960-61) writes, "Ann was I-House Social Chairman when we met, along with resident David Scheuring…Ann was an accomplished woman and a credit to I-House. My husband and I were honored to be counted among her friends." Friends Barbara Cohen Donald October 11, 2014 Barbara attended UC Berkeley where she joined the Alpha Phi sorority, became an avid reader, worked in the Berkeley High library, enjoyed her friends, sports, classes, and parties. She married William Goodricke Donald Jr. in Soda Springs in 1942 and they were married in 1944. She was a stimulating hostess, storyteller, professional volunteer and enthusiastic organizer. Barbara's four daughters were rewarded all their lives by her involvement with I-House where she hosted new students from other countries, mentoring them through their stay in the U.S. Emily Stout Evers January 23, 2015 Emily met her husband, Henry, at the sophomore honors dinner at UC Berkeley and married in 1943 after receiving their B.A.'s. Emily served as President of the YWCA of San Francisco and Marin County and was a unit chair in the League of Women Voters and education chair of the Junior League of San Francisco. Emily and Henry loved to travel and combined their love of gaining insights about new places with their interest in education through teaching in a Peace Corps-type program in Indonesia. Frank Charles Kaiser November 7, 2014 While in high school, Frank got to play the trombone with the Cal Band during the war. He went on to attend UC Berkeley where he received his B.A. in journalism in 1950. Frank wrote an award-winning nationally broadcast radio play, "You Can't Print at," and worked as a sportswriter for the San Francisco Call-Bulletin. In the 1960s, Frank left sports journalism to work in advertising. He won two national Addy awards from the American Advertising Federation in 1975 and 1977 for his direct mail advertising campaigns. Frank is survived by his wife Nectar; his daughter, Karri Lynn Kaiser and his son, David Aram Kaiser (IH 1979-81). George Ho (IH 1937-38) June 4, 2014 In 1959, George Ho founded Hong Kong's leading radio station, Commercial Radio Hong Kong (CRHK), and held the position of Honorary Chairman there until his recent death. George was awarded the Order of the British Empire from the British Government and the Gold Bauhinia Star from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for his contributions to society. He is survived by his son, George J. Ho, who lived at I-House in 1970 and is the current Chairman of CRHK, daughter-in-law Paulette, daughter Linda Ho, and grandchildren.
