International House Times 15 In Loving Memory Joyce Tucker With great sadness, the I-House community said goodbye to Joyce Tucker who passed away at her home on May 16, 2015. Joyce joined the Finance and Accounting team of I-House September 22, 1997 and is fondly remembered for her kind heart, big laugh and her dependable spirit. At a gathering of former and current staff members to celebrate her life, several of her colleagues shared stories of how Joyce would often sit in the patio of the café on the way to her car after work, reveling in the I-House experience as she watched everyone come in and out of the building. From this post, Joyce always greeted everyone with a warm smile even when she was in obvious discomfort from the health ailments from which she suffered. Shirley Spiller, Director of Business and Finance, read from a letter she wrote to Joyce, "Dear Joyce, I will miss your energy, enthusiasm, determination and patience. I miss your quiet music in the late afternoon and the way you delved into process improvements to make it easier, faster and better to get our work done. I deeply admire your love of family and the care you dedicated to yours; your sons are a credit to you. Thank you Joyce, for all the gifts you gave." Satya P. Agarwal Maya Agarwal Marjorie W. L. She is remembered as a strong woman in a generation that broke down barriers and an active citizen of the world with a principled pursuit of peace, justice and human rights. After overcoming the passing of her husband Hal in 1960, she opened the door to a career that spanned the next 30 years. Beginning as a Coordinator of Residence in the Oce of the Dean of Women at Penn State University, Jane moved to Berkeley in 1968 to take up a position as Residence Director at I-House. She managed residence and counseling services for international students before moving to Washington D.C. in 1975 to serve as Associate Director of the National Council of Churches. In the memoir that she would write late in life, Jane said, "Like any life, I have been tried and tested, loved and supported. I've had successes and failures and many rich experiences. Considering my early days, I have been surprised at how expansive my life became and pleased with how it opened up." If you have an I-House memory to share about Jane, please contact our Alumni Relations oce at ihalumni@berkeley.edu. Jane at her desk at I-House
