Davis Projects for Peace 2015 Projects for Peace is an initiative inspired by the late Kathryn W. Davis. Upon the occasion of her 100th birthday in 2007, Mrs. Davis, mother of Shelby M.C. Davis (see sidebar at right), chose to celebrate by committing $1 million for one hundred Projects for Peace with the objective to encourage and support today's motivated youth to create and try out their own ideas for building peace. Since 2008, 17 Davis Projects for Peace Awards have been granted to I-House Berkeley residents, including this year's recipients: Diana Quelhas from Mozambique and Samuel Fernandes from Australia for their project, Solar Energy for Community School in Mozambique and Patricie Uwase Mavubi from Rwanda for her project, Women's Leadership Mentoring Camp in Rwanda. Previously, only I-House residents were eligible for a Projects for Peace Award administered by I-House Berkeley. is year, however, the Projects for Peace program expanded to provide an additional competition among all UC Berkeley undergraduates for these prestigious grants. From the generosity of the Davis family, we were able to award a $10,000 Projects for Peace Award to Kasandra Kachakji for her project, Capoeira Para Todos: Developing Local Female Trainers to Support Psychosocial Well-being in an Azraq Refugee Camp. The day began with a festive brunch with more than 50 alumni of United World Colleges (UWC) and this year's recipients of the Davis Projects for Peace Award. Sharing our mission of international respect and understanding, many I-House residents participated in a UWC pre-university program prior to attending Berkeley. Guest of Honor, Shelby Davis, Founder of the Davis UWC Scholars Program and son of Davis Projects for Peace founder Kathryn Wasserman Davis, attended with his family and met with this year's Davis Projects for Peace award recipients (pictured in article at left). The afternoon continued with a Resident Life Showcase for alumni, parents and residents, featuring guided tours, a fun photo booth, a piano performance by resident Edwin Neo, and a presentation from our student-produced original video series, Global Voices.
