New Books by Alumni Authors Did you know that I-House has been home to many professional authors? Each spring we feature a variety of books by alumni authors so you can discover the world through the creative minds of your I-House friends! The Daily Practice of Compassion Dora L. Wang (IH 1982-84) "A wonderful history of how a dedicated group of men and women conceived and built a new type of medical school." -Janet Napolitano, President, University of California Villages in the City Stefan Al (IH 2008-09) Countless Chinese villages have been engulfed by modern cities. It is the world's largest urban demolition. Stefan's book argues for the value of urban villages as places that need to be enhanced and preserved. The Checkmate Pendulum Antonio Maria Costa (IH 1966-69) History's pendulum oscillates between Berlin and Paris, Washington and Moscow. Eventually it comes to rest in Beijing, where investigative journalist Bosco finds evidence that China's quest for supremacy is more than neo-imperialism: it's vengeance. The Gift of Cancer: Turn Your Tragedy into a Treasure Wendy Treynor (IH 2006) Wendy communicates a little-known secret–a universal cause of human suffering and its cure– that offers breakthrough understanding to help you heal yourself and our world. Cooked Up: Food Fiction from Around the World Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni (IH 1978-79) This perpetually fascinating subject has inspired a unique collection of fiction from a wonderfully diverse and international group of authors. 6 International House Times Joe Lurie, I-House Executive Director Emeritus (1988-2007), has written a new book about perception and misperceptions across cultures that includes a chapter about cultural conundrums and discoveries among I-House residents. Joe shares stories from his own experiences and research across cultures, as well as from a long career in international educational exchange. In the foreword, former IH Executive Director, Ambassador Martin Brennan writes, "No matter your background or age, Perception and Deception will expand your understanding of other cultures (and your own!) in astonishing ways. If only I'd had Joe Lurie's intercultural awareness while serving in the diplomatic corps in Asia, Africa, and Europe, I'd have understood the deeper cultural messages that escape people who hear largely what they're used to hearing and see mostly what they are used to seeing." Many I-House alumni remember Joe Lurie's charismatic gift of storytelling. His new book is sure to be a hit with residents and alumni alike. Take a sneak preview of Joe's forthcoming book at PerceptionandDeception.com. e book will be available in paperback and Kindle on Amazon in July 2015; E-book versions on Barnes & Noble and Apple. Stay tuned for Joe's book launch this summer and the Cal Discoveries trip to South Africa in the fall – see details below. n CAL DISCOVERIES TRAVEL I-House alumni are welcome to join Joe Lurie and Donna Rosenthal (IH 1969-1971) for the Cal Discoveries Treasures of Southern Africa tour September 30 - October 14, 2015.
