12 International House Times Richard Bauman (IH 1978-80) Richard visited I-House on Cal Day, April 18, with his cousin, Austin Mendoza, who will attend UC Berkeley as a freshman this fall. ey went on a terric guided tour of I-House led by Ryan Jones, Director of Admissions, who discussed the history of I-House and pointed out its many new technological features. After the tour, a current I-House resident asked Richard "How did I-House residents survive before e-mail? You must have had a lot of face-to-face conversations." Richard responded, "at was indeed the case, and memorable, enjoyable conversations they were." Boel (Ahlgren) Jenssen (IH 1972) Boel joined Joy Iwasa for lunch at the Field Club and shared her story of how she followed her husband from Finland to Berkeley and moved into I-House after the dissolution of that relationship. She remarked that living in I-House and the romances that followed, made what could have been an unpleasant time of her life, one of the best. Markos Kounalakis (IH 1977-78) Markos is a print and network broadcast journalist and author who covered wars and revolutions, both civil and technological. He is President and Publisher Emeritus of the Washington Monthly and is currently researching the geopolitics of global news networks. His latest writing and news are available at markoskounalakis.com: Foreign Policy Takes from the Californian Edge of the Pacific Rim, that features thought provoking stories including "The Perverse Act of Recruiting Kids for War" and "Fear of Doctors; Vaccines in California and Around the World." 1980s Teresa J. Gagnon (IH 1986) and Sharon Huang (IH 1982-84) Teresa and Sharon visited I-House with their families and Teresa remarked, "It was certainly surreal for my sister and me to be back at I-House after so long. It was a treat to have my family be able to experience this beautiful place as well." Heribert A. Hirte (IH 1988-89) Heribert was elected into the German Parliament (the Deutscher Bundestag) in 2013. Since February 2014, Professor Hirte has been serving as chairman of the CDU/ CSU parliamentary St. Stephen's Group, which promotes religious tolerance, religious freedom and works to end the persecution of Christians. He continues to serve as Managing Director of the Institute for Trade, Shipping and Business Law (SHSW) at the University of Hamburg. Mark D. Jenkins (IH 1987) Mark visited from Australia. Among his many stops in Berkeley were his fraternity and a visit with his former I-House roomate. Mark stopped by the Development Oce to chat about what is going on in I-House. He was excited to see his old directory photo and pointed out a couple of familiar faces. Po-Yang "Paul" Y. Lu (IH 1980-81) Visited in September and ordered a brick in memory of his wife Ning, who he met at I-House. Paul's brick reads, "God Will Send Us Back To I-House. Ning & Yang Lu 1981" Dora-Linda Lau Wang (IH 1982-84) Dora was excited to take this photo with her daughter at the Front Desk. As a resident, Dora worked as the Front Desk Assistant and fondly remembers stories about getting to know fellow residents and their adventures as they passed by. See page 6 about Dora's latest book, The Daily Practice of Compassion. 1990s Wendy Jia (IH 1997) Wendy visited with her two daughters to show them Berkeley as a future college prospect. Wendy met her husband at UC Berkeley while studying Civil Engineering. Sophie Marnette-Piepenbrock (IH 1991-93) Dr. Sophie Marnette visited from London before giving a lecture for the UC Berkeley French Department.
