International House Times 11 Alumni News & Notes Hong-sun Liu (IH 1961-67) Izzy Goodwin and Joy Iwasa visited Quanta Laboratories in Santa Clara and received a tour from the lab's Founder and President, Dr. Hong-sun Liu (pictured in front of one of the lab's signature testing chambers.) Quanta Laboratories is the largest and most experienced independent environmental testing laboratory in Northern California and specializes in simulating environments to verify the robustness of a product's design and manufacturing process during operation, transportation and storage. During his career, Dr. Liu has developed four patents in environmental testing and has also taught engineering courses at UC Berkeley. Larry G. Ludwig (IH 1963) Larry retired from the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington DC in 2003. He later moved to Washington state where he volunteered with the National Park Service, the Spokane Opera, the Washington State Democrats and taught English as a Second Language classes. He discovered a passion for Brazil and is currently spending six months a year there. Sherri Sawaya (IH 1964-66) Sherri writes, "Thank you to all the staff & I-House Council for all you do! My time living there was one of the most significant experiences of my life. And I still treasure and enjoy the friendships I made there. Bravo!" Jaime D. Tabares (IH 1966-67) Jaime came from Columbia to visit I-House with his wife of 44 years and his sister in-law. He shared a story of how Marvin J. Baron, Director Emeritus of UC Berkeley's Services for International Students and Scholars here at I-House, got him an interview for a summer job with a petroleum company with one phone call. Jaime was pleased to say he got the job! 1970s Susan Aberg (IH 1976) When Susan lived at I-House, she held a work-study position at e Oakland Museum to assist the Art Curator with her Professor, Wayne iebaud's retrospective exhibition. After a brief time away from the Bay Area, she has worked in many departments at UC Berkeley ever since: academic, international, public outreach, and administrative. Susan is currently Executive Assistant to the Associate Vice Chancellor and the Senior Strategic Advisor in the Research Department. Susan is an avid hiker, traveler, and singer/songwriter. "Since my memorable I-House experience," she writes, "I have continued to be drawn to cultures and experiences dierent from my own." 1940s Nels B. Nelson (IH 1940-42) Nels Nelson visited I-House with his wife and two friends from the University of Oslo and reminisced about his time at I-House as he gave them a tour of the Hall of History. He exclaimed, "it feels good to be back home!" 1950s Barbara Hyde Crafford (IH 1950-52) Barbara writes, "My two years at I-House added incredible richness to my life: my husband, Wally Crawford, life-long friends from many cultures, four years overseas in Pakistan and Sri Lanka and an enduring interest in world affairs." Sherwin S. Lehrer (IH 1956-57) Sherwin writes, "In 1956, six residents met at I-House. We all became friends and this resulted in three marriages, all of which are still intact. Except Alice Chen, who died suddenly in 2001 and was married to David Kearns. Patricia Olson and Richard Bozak, along with Liane Reif and Sherwin Lehrer are still together." William "Whitney" W. Shane (IH 1951-54) William writes, "I'm still hard at work at the Monterey Institute for Research in astronomy. We have a summer student program where students work one-on-one with staff members on current projects. Last summer I worked together with a colleague and two students. We worked very well together. On a hunch, I enquired what languages we all spoke at home. All four were different- English, Dutch, Spanish & Farsi. A multicultural experience close to home! But I-House is still top." 1960s Miguel E. Bonangelino (IH 1965) Miguel and his wife, Josefina traveled to Berkeley from Maryland for a reunion with his former I-House roommates and friends. In addition to forming longstanding friendships within this group, I-House Couple, Karen and William Podolsky formed a longstanding marriage, celebrating their 44th anniversary this June. Norman E. Goldstein (IH 1960-61) Norman and Susan (Newfield) Goldstein (IH 1963-64) celebrated their 50th Anniversary at their vineyard in the Sonoma Valley. Norman, former Earth Science Division Director at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, retired in 2002. Susan, founder of her own executive recruitment company in San Francisco, retired the same year.
