In 1981, I was pleased to serve as a founder and first International Secretary of Peace Brigades International, a Gandhian human rights organization that made important contributions to the protection of human rights workers in a variety of countries. Donna Rosenthal (IH 1968-70) In remembering Robin Williams' life, Donna shared an article she wrote for the LA Times in 1990 of the beloved comedian and actor whom she had the opportunity to interview during the launch of the film, Cadillac Man. Donna observed, Williams shifts four cerebral gears at once. He jumps from the table, acts out two Queens car dealers making a sales pitch to a Chinese customer. A reporter spills a glass of water while juggling two tape recorders trying to capture the barrage of words. Like Rockefeller, I counted the dimes. In the cafeteria I was charged 35 cents for breakfast, 20 cents for cereal with milk and 15 cents for a banana - but I found a grubby supermarket where I could buy ten tiny packets of Kellogg's cereals for 33 cents, milk for 10 cents, and a bunch of bananas for 15 cents. is meant breakfast for ten days on 58 cents instead of $3.50." Professor Varden Fuller (Agri. Econ.), then Chair of my Dissertation Committee, petitioned the Dean of the Graduate Division to expel me from the grad school for soliciting a letter of recommendation from Carey McWilliams, then Editor of The Nation magazine. Fuller was wrong and I (of course) was right. It was the time of Senator Joe McCarthy in DC, and Jack Tenney in California. Professor John D. Hicks, Dean of the Grad Division, had given away the bride when she (Estelle Lau) and I married at I- House in 1952. Dear John D. quietly smoothed things over and saved my career. I will always remember Dean Hicks' rescue. What a wonderful, kindly gentleman!" Alumni News & Notes
