International House Times 11 Back to Berkeley Edith Schroeder Overholt (IH 1951-52) Edith visited with son Bill Overholt and family for a tour with Joy Iwasa. Edith met her husband E. Llewellyn Overholt (IH 1951-52) at I-House. Deirdre F. Dowdakin (IH 1967-68) Deirdre visited on August 6, 2014 to see her directory photo as well as that of her roommate Nancy Nagase (IH 1967-69). She shared that the two had lunched together and reminisced about their days at I-House. Mely G. Tan (IH 1964-65) Mely traveled from Jakarta, Indonesia to visit her family who joined her for lunch and a tour with Joy Iwasa. Mely is now retired from working more than 30 years at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, a government research institute, and 4 years as head of the Research Institute of Catholic University, in Jakarta. She wrote a number of books and articles in national and international publications on the Ethnic Chinese in Indonesia and other countries in SE Asia, on women and empowerment and societal development. She's still teaching at the University of Indonesia, and is an active member of the Indonesian Academy of Science. Madeleine Wulffson (IH 1967-68) In early July, Madeleine came back to I-House to reminisce about her time here, first as a resident, and then as Program Secretary. Madeleine remembers, "In those days we had regular Sing-Alongs where we sang folk songs we compiled into a book called Musicanto. Residents and guests sang with us, most often after the monthly Sunday Suppers, either in the Auditorium or the Great Hall." She now lives in Rome a few doors away from where Liliana Cardile, our Front Desk Manager, used to live. What a small world! Madeleine was given a tour of I-House by Liliane Koziol, the Director of Programs. Arun K. Jain (IH 1970) Professor Arun K. Jain, who teaches Marketing Research at the University of Buffalo, returned to I-House with his family after a 44 year absence. Smiling, he described the many evenings listening to music in the great Hall and was happy he was "back to the nest" thanks to his grateful daughter. Lois Bueler (IH 1979) Lois visited I-House May 1, 2014 searching for more information about her parents' time here. Her father was Theodore H. Eaton, Jr. (IH 1930-34) and her mother was Grace Janlen (IH 1930-33). Lois stayed at I-House for a NEH Summer Seminar for faculty members from across the country. Manmohan T. Mahal (IH 1975-77) Mohan "Taj" Mahal pictured right with Eric Schmidt (IH 1976-80), stand in front of Mohan's photo in the I-House Hall of History at the 2014 Gala where Wendy Schmidt (IH 1978-80) was honored as Alumna of the Year. Mohan is a twenty year heart transplant recipient, devoting his life to making the earth a better place, like Wendy Schmidt. Mohan builds energy efficient homes in honor of the donor family who gave him life. Kamran Nemati (IH 1984-1995) writes,"e great summer of '89 is permanently carved in our memories. Many of us are still in touch and visit on both sides of the Atlantic, thus the reason for our 25 year reunion" organized by Dariush Mirfendereski (IH 1988-92) and held at I-House on July 12, 2014. Händschke (IH 2003-04) Sebastian, who resides with his family in Berlin and Weimar returned to the bay area in July for David Bruce Anderson's (IH 2002-04) wedding. On July 22nd, Sebastian visited I-House, and later that week attended the Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan soccer game at Memorial Stadium with Victor Pineda, PhD (IH 1999-2000). Sebastian has fond memories of his time at I-House and with his host family, IH Board Member Bob Wong and his wife Sheryl.
