Alumni News & Notes 1940s Jamshed K. & Parvarti Fozdar (IH 1946-47) "Heartiest felicitations to your great Institution. We stayed at I-House during the Blaisdell years. Here are the photos showing what 65 years of married life can do to you. Parvati is 86 and I am 87. The government here in Singapore has posted a 15 volume website on Jamshed and Parvati Fozdar Collection: donors.nl.sg/A52_intro.asp." Peggy Post Grunland (IH 1946-47) Peggy poses with a photo of herself when she was the I-House "front desk girl" in the late 40s. "I think rent was about $50 for a semester," said Peggy. "I've met so many wonderful people at I-House." This includes her husband Paul Grunland, a resident of IH during the Navy "Callahan Hall" era. "This has always been an amazing place for connecting people." Mason Gaffney (IH 1948-52) "This September The Mason Gaffney Reader will be released, 20 essays on socio-economicpolitical issues, some simpatico and all provocative. Included is, Europe's Fatal Affair with VAT; What's the Matter with Michigan? and Taking the Professor for a Ride. In September the days grow short, and we surviving 'GoldenAgers' see the leaves of life dropping, one by one. May we leave as much good to the next generations as was left to us." Mason and Estelle Lau are one of the many I-House Couples who met and married at I-House and are featured on our Love webpage! Did you meet your sweetheart at I-House? We'll add your names to the I-House Couples list and feature your photo and story on our Love page: http://ihouse.berkeley.edu/love Joan W. Hoover (IH 1949-53) "During World War II, I was an American girl, living near Detroit. After the war, as a student at Cal, I lived at International House. A woman from Czechoslovakia was my roommate. One evening, we were working at our desks, when she flung herself down on the floor between the beds. I was astonished. She soon resumed her chair and work, and only said, "The airplane." What? I wondered. I hadn't even noticed that a plane flew by. Many years have passed, I can still remember the first lesson I ever learned in Berkeley...that I was one of the fortunate few." See Joan's photo on page 6. 1950s Renata Polt Schmitt, formerly Harriet Polt (IH 1956-57) Renata shared the photo at left and writes, "I have vivid memories of the Sunday dinners, conversations, picnics, and trips made with 'the gang'-people I met at I-House who became lifelong friends. My two years at I-House were an important period of my life." Rafi M. Salem In September, Rafi enjoyed a tour of I-House where he spent many hours as a visiting scholar at Cal in the early 50's. He shared memories with IH Alumni Relations Director Shanti Corrigan and an update on his career as a chemist, entrepreneur, businessman and artist. "I've traveled and lived all over the world" said Rafi, who is originally from Iraq, "there is no place like I-House." 1960s Lila C. Rayol (IH 1966) "I was a resident from Belém, Pará, Brazil. I developed two careers: a university professor and an English translator for the State of Pará. My daughters live in the US. Melinda Rhone, a Harvard graduate, lives in Boston running a business of localized translations. Jackie lives in Florida, married and working for Jardenc's in Boca Raton. My son Vicente, lives in Brasilia, and was an administrative officer for the Senate." 1970s Ronald Fagin (IH 1967-70 & 1972-73) Ron works at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose and was named an IBM Fellow in 2012. There are 70 Fellows among 450,000 IBM employees, and only 246 Fellows in the 50 year history of the program. Ron also won the IEEE McDowell Award, the highest technical award of the IEEE Computer Society. Christine Anna Lee (IH 1971-72) Christine is currently working on a mixed use building project in Guam and came to I-House in September for a visit and to reminisce about her wonderful time as a resident of International House.
