International House Times 15 Alumni News & Notes 1970s Stuart Samuel (IH 1975) Stuart is happy to report that his children's book, The Adventure of Thomas the Turtle, has won several prizes: a 2018 Reviewer Choice Award, a Be Kind to Animals Prize from Feathered Quill Book Reviews, and an Independent Press Award 2018 Distinguished Favorite. 1980s Nanette Chadwick (IH 1982-83) has fond memories of the diversity of people she met and befriended while residing at I-House. She continues to be dedicated to the mission of I-House through her involvement with the International Women for Peace and Understanding, a small international group of women in Alabama who work for peace. Learn more at: www.iwpuauburn.org. Floris van den Broek (IH 1988-90) and his wife, Eva, have been living in Amsterdam for the past ten years, after having lived in New York and Paris. Floris writes, "I've been running several technology companies, and currently, I run a cyber-security company, called Redsocks Security, based out of the Netherlands, selling virus-detection software worldwide. I often see other I-House friends of the same period, including Julius Pinckaers (IH 1988-89, Mieko Tachikawa (IH 1988), and Shunsa Hayashi (IH 1988)." 1990s Sylvie Brieu (IH 1991-92) writes, "My last book, Burma: The Roads to Freedom, about women change-makers in Myanmar who lead the way to peace, freedom, and democracy was published in 2016. I'm currently working on a new editorial project about the American West." When she is not in the field, Sylvie leads workshops and seminars on cultural diversity in schools, and hopes to return to UC Berkeley to continue this conversation with students here. 2010s Johannes Bogen (IH 2015) and Minji Song (IH 2015) met at I-House in September 2015, only to separate nine months later when they returned to their home countries of Norway and South Korea, respectively. Nevertheless, the couple got engaged in April 2017, and are currently planning a Norwegian wedding! Nneka Vivian Okafor (IH 2013-14) writes, "A lot has happened on my end since leaving I-House in 2014. I married my longtime friend and classmate from my undergrad studies in Nigeria. We live and work in Washington D.C. Also, I was hired by the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group. I'm enjoying the job and love the team I work with." Christina Randall (IH 2015-17) has moved to Houston, Texas to clerk for a federal judge for the next two years. Christina writes, "I have to admit that, as much as I loved living at I-House when I was still a law student, I am coming to appreciate it even more now that I am an attorney out in the world. In my opinion, the intellectual curiosity at I-House is second to none. I-House fosters an appreciation for the diversity of experiences and cultures all around the world. And what has struck me since I graduated and left my little room on the 8th floor, is the sheer optimism of the students. These are students who truly believe that they can not only be someone important, but that they can be a force for positive change in this world—all parts of it." Christina is not the only I-House alum in her family; in fact, she and her brother, Morgan Randall (IH 2014-16) were both residents and scholarship recipients during their time here. Christina is grateful for the aid that she received while at I-House and looks forward to being able to support scholarships at I-House in the future.
