18 International House Times Alumni News & Notes In Memory Sigvor Hamre ornton August 31, 2015 Sigvor, who was 93 when she passed suddenly, was a proud Berkeley resident since moving from Norway in 1952 with husband Haakon Hamre, a UC Berkeley Professor in the Scandinavian department, and four children. Five years after Haakon's death, Sigvor married Robert ornton, a UC Berkeley professor of physics, and gained two more step-children. Sigvor was a dedicated volunteer on campus and at the Norwegian Seaman's Church of San Francisco. She also opened her home to hundreds of students, mostly Norwegian, studying in the US and was affectionately referred to as "Mor Norge" (Mother Norway). Jean Lemmon July 9, 2015 Jean graduated from UC Berkeley in 1945 where she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority and the Prytanean Society. She and her husband Jim were loyal Cal Bear fans. A longtime resident of Oakland, she taught art at the Head-Royce School and is survived by her daughters, Lee Stubbs of Texas and Peggy Kline of Placerville; four grandchildren, Josh and Dan Paige, Jeff Stubbs, and Becky Weber; and ten great-grandchildren. Miriam Webner Mellen May 15, 2015 After graduating from UC Berkeley at age 57, Miriam set out to travel the world. She worked with people in Tanzania, India, China, Indonesia, Australia, Costa Rica and in Europe. She was a supportive advocate of the disabled, the disadvantaged, and those living with HIV/AIDS. To meet Miriam was to become her friend, and she made many friends during her 92 years. Orville "Orv" J. Golub, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, passed away peacefully in September. Orv grew up in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington with both bachelor's and master's degrees. He lived at I-House while working on a Ph.D. in microbiology and met the love of his life, Ellina "Elli" Marx Jacobs in the Great Hall. Orv and Elli wed in San Francisco in 1941 and their marvelous marriage lasted until Elli's passing 67 years later. During World War II, he served in the US Navy as a lieutenant commander and was stationed with his growing family in Maryland, doing research in virology. In 1948, he returned to civilian life and co-founded Bio-Science Laboratories in Los Angeles. Orv and Elli raised their six children in Westwood where Orv enjoyed simple pleasures: dining with friends, life-long learning (PLATO Society at UCLA), golf, and cultural events at the LA Music Center. Orv enjoyed searching for antique microscopes. The Golub Collection, one of the finest collections of 18th century microscopes, is Orv's legacy and is on permanent display in the Life Sciences Building at UC Berkeley.
