International House Times 15 Alumni News & Notes Norbert Streitz (IH 1976-77) In July and August, Norbert returned to California from Germany, visiting the Berkeley campus and I-House. He is the scientific director of the Smart Future Initiative and gave talks about his research on human-centered design of smart cities and smart airports. Norbert spoke at Google in Mountain View and the new DesignLab of UC San Diego. He was also the program chair of a large international conference on Distributed, Ambient and Pervasive Interactions in Los Angeles. 1980s Soumitra Dutta (IH 1985) and Lourdes S. Casanova (IH 1985) After living in France for 23 years, Soumitra and Lourdes have returned to the United States. Soumitra is now the dean of the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University, where Lourdes is a senior lecturer and academic director of the Emerging Markets Institute. Soumitra and Lourdes met at I-House in the fall of 1985 and said, "We are very grateful to I-House for making us feel at home when we first came to the US and making it possible for us to meet, start a family and a journey together." 1990s Mukhambika Adapa (IH 1991-94), Cristina (Hall) Burkett (IH 1991-94) & Maria (Chavez) Goettsch (IH 1991-94) "It was wonderful to visit I-House with our children. Sharing with them the stories of all we did as residents, Program Fellows and I-House Resident Council members, sparked smiles on their faces. ey saw the rooms where we lived, visited the library, and met some of the staff who kindly gave them brownies and cookies. e kids especially enjoyed eating at the dining hall. e frozen yogurt was as enticing for them as it was for us. Although we live far away from one another (Maria lives in Germany with her husband, Christian, who was also a resident) we have kept our friendship strong all these years after our memorable times living at I-House by visiting with one another on a yearly basis." 2000s Vinicius Rodrigues Vieira (IH 2008-10) After completing a doctorate in International Relations at Nuffield College at the University of Oxford in 2014, Vinicius became a lecturer in international relations at the School of Social Sciences at the Getulio Vargas Foundation in Brazil and a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of International Relations at the University of São Paulo. He is also currently a fellow in the first cohort of the summer program in social science at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Vlasta Vranjes (IH 1998-03) Vlasta writes, "On August 5th, my husband, Filipe Ribeiro (IH 1998-01), and I (pictured far right) attended the launch of Juliana Barbassa's (IH 2001-02) book, Dancing with the Devil in the City of God: Rio de Janeiro on the Brink (Touchstone/Simon & Schuster) at the Americas Society/Council of the Americas in New York City. All three of us are I-House alumni. e book focuses on Brazil during the turbulent years when Rio de Janeiro was elected as host of the 2016 Olympics, when the economy was riding high and anything seemed possible, through hosting the World Cup and the disillusion that followed." Julia Zamorska (IH 2000, 2004-05) Julia was named PR Executive of the Year at the 2015 American Business Awards Gala, the nation's premier business award program, on June 22, 2015 in Chicago. Julia currently leads global public relations for Fareportal, which powers the third largest travel technology site, CheapOair.
