Jessica Clarkson, MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program Advisor, writes, "Realizing that feeling at home is so important for international students, and not wanting to reinvent the wheel, we are so grateful to International House for including our Scholars over the next two years as they come to our campus as freshmen. e I-House Host Family Program was able to accommodate a couple requests in the spring semester and we look forward to rolling out a full matching system in fall 2015 with our incoming cohort of 20 freshmen and three graduate students." "Every international student should have an accompanying host family." - Micheal Omeka, International student from Nigeria In addition to providing matches with host families, International House hosted ve students from Africa while their dorms were closed during winter break. Ryan Jones, I-House Director of Admissions, coordinated with Jessica to discuss additional outreach and support that I-House could provide to the program. Jessica writes, "Several of our scholars mentioned how nice it was to have a 'home away from home.' ank you to I-House for hosting some of our undergraduates over winter break." n From left: Liliana Cardile, Micheal Omeka, Pat and Jim Baylor Warricks' 70 th Anniversary BIG THANKS TO BIG GIVE DONORS On November 20, 2014, I-House participated in UC Berkeley's first-ever online giving event, the Big Give. Our donors contributed over $9,000 to I-House through 68 individual gifts during the 24-hour fundraising campaign. That is the largest number of online gifts we have ever received in a single day! Because of this support, we also won a $5,000 bonus in the Big Bang contest. We are grateful for such a wonderful community of residents, alumni, parents, and friends who support International House. Thank you for helping us to build a strong foundation for our future. Look for news of this year's Big Give this fall on our website. Schmidt Matching Challenge Progress With more than a year left in the Schmidt Matching Challenge, we are pleased that we have passed the halfway mark towards the goal of raising $1 million. The Schmidt Matching Challenge, established by I-House alumni Wendy Schmidt (IH 1978-80) and Eric Schmidt (IH 1976-80), benefits the Dining Commons Transformation Project. "This is an exciting time for I-House," says Joy Iwasa, I-House Development Director. "We've had an unprecedented response to the Match. It illustrates that alumni and friends are eager to make a contribution in the most meaningful of ways." It's not too late to make your contribution. Susan Klee (a.k.a. Susan Mihaly), Assistant to the Executive Director from 1971 to 1981, echoed the sentiments of many: "Although Sherry had been a professor, he was a brilliant administrator. e budget was balanced. Residents complained about very little, except the food, of course – and that was only in winter." Many people remember Betsey being extremely active as the I-House First Lady, attending retreats, hosting dinners for Resident Council members, and organizing holiday sta parties for employees. (Read more of their story on page 1) I-House is thrilled to honor Sherry and Betsey, and we hope you will join us at the Anniversary Dinner.
