Horst Simon (IH 1978-79) wrote, "After many years in the Bay Area, my wife, Candice Yu Simon (IH 1977-79), and I will relocate to Abu Dhabi, UAE. I will take on the leadership of a new research center, ADIA Lab, funded by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority." After 32 years of teaching, Subhash Risbud (IH 1970-74) retired from UC Davis as a Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. Hidefumi Yamagami (IH 1975-77) is teaching international finance at the Institute of Business and Accounting at Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan, after a long career at the Bank of Tokyo. Gregory Neil Ivey (IH 1977-78) and Sharon Elain Ivey (IH 1977-78) met while Gregory was a resident and Sharon was working as a Graduate Resident Assistant at I-House. is year they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. eir wedding reception was held in the Great Hall. Jeffry Canin (IH 1978-79) is serving on a number of startup and non-profit boards, focused primarily on cleantech. Peter Pazzaglini (IH 1978-82) is a Distinguished Senior Scholar and Adjunct Full Professor of History at Columbia University. 1980s George Schultze (IH 1982-84) is a Jesuit priest living at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Jerusalem and working at the Latin Seminary in Beit Jala. He also has a ministry with Filipino migrant workers. Khatharya Um (IH 1983-88) was awarded the Fukuoka Academic Prize 2023, which honors the individuals who have made contributions to the fields of Asian studies, Asian art, and Asian culture. She is UC Berkeley's Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Social Sciences Division, Associate Professor of Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies, and affiliate faculty with Cal's Global Studies Program, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and Institute for European Studies. Stephen Liston (IH 1985-87) is moving with his family to Spain, after 33 years focused on Latin America and international work. His son David Liston (IH 2018-19) is now a Lieutenant in the US Navy, training to fly fighter jets. His daughter Elizabeth Liston (IH 2021-22) just graduated from Cal and is embarking on a career in international relations. After leaving the German Parliament, the Bundestag, in 2021, Heribert A. Hirte (IH 1988-89) began teaching again as professor at the University of Hamburg. He also became a fellow of the German non-profit Finanzwende and a board member of Transparency International Germany. Babu Rahman (IH 1987-89) reports that the non-profit organization that he started, Agami, is formally registered in the U.S. and Bangladesh. Agami has served over 100,000 underprivileged children, teaching K-10. He also says, "My wife, Sophia, whom I met on my last day at Cal, has endured 30 years with me and seems ready for another 30!" Kamran Nemati (IH 1984-95) joined the State University of New York at Buffalo as a Professor of Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering in September 2022. 1990s In summer 2022, Mario Turner (IH 1992-93) and Pedro Alcayde (IH 1992- 93), former I-House roommates, reunited in Spain with their families. Alen Voskanian (IH 1999-2000) published the book Reclaiming the Joy of Medicine: Finding Purpose and Happiness in Today's Medical Industry. He also recently became Chief Operating Officer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. 2000s Robert Corrie (IH 2000) would love to return to Berkeley next year! Until then, he is based at Oxford University as a postdoc working on extreme weather events and climate change. Achala Navaratne (IH 2002-04) shared, "I would not be in the job that I am doing today as a global citizen if not for the learnings and experiences I gained at I-House, which opened my eyes and opened new doors and paths."
