H ello, my name is Shaun Carver and I am honored to serve as International House's 6th Executive Director. As I learn more about I-House's unique and rich history, the distinct features and needs of this historic building, and our vital mission, the dedicated support of the I-House community is clear. In this, my first International House Times newsletter, I'd like to provide some important updates in this milestone 90th Anniversary year. To begin, I'd like to share a few words about what's happening at I-House and where we are heading in these challenging times. Due to the continuing prevalence and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sad but necessary temporary closure of I-House has now been extended to include the entire 2020–21 academic year. I wish to acknowledge and thank the many staff who have been laid off or reassigned elsewhere on campus—hopefully temporarily—because of the closure, and to express that the board, remaining staff, and I are all working to ensure that we can reopen as soon as it is safe and practical to do so. Our Program Office has reached out to continuing and prospective residents who were impacted by the closure to maintain a virtual I-House community and support even during the closure. In this issue, we thank several board members who are finishing their terms for their service and support. We also share some of the ways that the I-House community has transformed and persevered during the pandemic—both at the House and through alumni rising up against COVID-19. We share highlights of our new Global Community Initiative seeking to facilitate connections between alumni, and between alumni and residents. Please join our engagement and mentoring platform ihberkeleyconnect.org if you haven't already. is issue contains the annual Honor Roll listing of gifts from the past year, which have made a world of difference, and those gifts made in memory and in honor of special family members and friends. We hope that you enjoy hearing about some I-House friends in our News & Notes feature, and will recall fond memories of life at I-House in the 90th Anniversary timeline spread. Finally, we are pleased to provide a chance for you to get your own personal copy of the limited edition, hand-printed I-House 90th Anniversary poster created by noted artist David Goines. As Executive Director, I would be remiss if I didn't also reflect gratefully that any gifts you might wish to make at this time, on the occasion of our 90th anniversary, are an opportunity to honor the remarkable history of I-House and to support us now in preparation for our reopening. I'm sending out the message to all of our alumni and friends that I personally welcome your contact, your ideas, and suggestions, and I invite you to participate even more fully in our global community. My personal thanks for your support in keeping the I-House dream alive! Sincerely, Shaun R.
