2003 2008 2007 The tradition of Sunday Supper, established in 1910 by I-House founder Harry Edmonds, continues today. Held four times each year, Sunday Suppers include a speaker and entertainment provided by talented residents. The final Sunday Supper of every year includes the traditional Candlelight Ceremony, where the symbolic flame of "enlightenment" honoring our global humanity is passed among residents, alumni, and friends. 2010 2012 The first nine Gateway Scholarship recipients begin their Ph. D. studies at Cal while living at I-House through an unprecedented partnership between the campus and the House. For the first time, this full scholarship package of tuition, room, board, and stipend allows Cal to compete with private schools by offering similar scholarship packages. Each scholarship is a named endowment. 2009 Joe Lurie leads the successful $10.6 million 75th Anniversary Campaign to fund scholarships, renovations, and programs. The Edith Coliver estate endows the Festival of Cultures, financial aid tops $600,000, and Steven Rockefeller is honored at the 75th Anniversary Gala. The Joe Lurie Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Fellowship becomes the first endowed fellowship to support volunteers pursuing a doctorate. 2004 - 07 Despite the economic downturn, I-House strives to assist 20% of residents to ensure cultural as well as socio-economic diversity. Scholarship recipients including those pictured above benefit from the generosity of I-House alumni and friends around the world. I-House establishes a World of Difference Donor Wall honoring contributors who support the I-House mission with lifetime giving of $5,000 or more. Martin Brennan is appointed the fourth Executive Director. The Cal alum and former ambassador brings more than 30 years of international affairs experience to the role. Brennan initiates Navigating Cultures, the first for-credit UC class offered by I-House. International House celebrates its 80th Anniversary with several events and a collection of 80 Perspectives on 80 Years. A strategic planning process prepares I-House for the future. In July 2012, Dr. Hans C. Giesecke began his service as the fifth Executive Director of International House. His driving focus has been on making I-House student's residential experience a top highlight of their time at Berkeley. CIL, The Robertson Center for Intercultural Leadership was launched on October 1, 2013. CIL is a center of excellence for training and research to advance leadership, understanding, and collaboration across cultures. Through expert facilitation, participatory workshops, and skilled coaching, CIL creates powerful learning experiences across the corporate, non-profit, government, and education sectors. 2013
