22 International House Times In Memory 1960s Barry Rees James (IH 1964-65) Barry Rees James passed away at Saint Luke's in Duluth, Minnesota on March 31, 2019 with his family by his side. He was born in 1942. Barry earned his Ph.D. in statistics from Cal in 1971. At Berkeley, he met Kang Ling, the love of his life, whom he married in 1972. e couple went on to teach at the Instituto de Matematica Pura e Aplicada in Rio de Janeiro until 1987, when they both joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Barry is survived by his wife, Kang Ling James; sister Sally (Pete) Hassemer; Ta-Yung (Marjorie) Ling; Jane (Bobby) Ling; and Helen (Mike) Ho. Nieces and nephews are Scot Jones, David Jones, Tara James, Amy Hlavacek, Albert Lee, Maggie Kley, Lita Martinez, Benjamin Ling, Alan Ling, eresa Ling, Mike Ho, and Jill Ling. He leaves behind cherished friends and colleagues. Turhan Erdoğan (IH 1968-69) Turhan passed away on January 4, 2019 at the age of 81. He came to Berkeley for his Ph.D. and completed his thesis in 1970. Upon his return to Turkey, Turhan became a professor and though he officially retired in 2005, Turhan continued as a part-time professor at METU until his death. Turhan wrote a number of books in both Turkish and English over the course of his life, including Ten ousand Years-History of Concrete and Binding Materials. Turhan is survived by two sons, Selim and Sinan. He has touched the lives of many students throughout the years and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. 1970s Clara Chen Liou (IH 1976) Clara died on November 5, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, she studied architecture at Cheng Kung University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1973 and then attended UC Berkeley for a master's degree in architecture. She met her husband-to-be at International House. She became a registered architect in California in 1986 and a certified LEED AP BD+C in 2009. Her works include the Bellevue Hotel in Chicago and the Reef Hotel in Guam. Highlights of her East Coast experience include the renovation of Wachovia Main Tower and design of Morrison Place Buildings. Clara is survived by her husband Donald Liou, and two children. Friends Ellen Spaethling Ellen died peacefully in her home at the age of 88 on February 23, 2019 surrounded by her family. She married her husband, Robert Spaethling (IH 1952-53), and the couple moved to the East Coast and settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts to raise their three children. Ellen is survived by her husband of 66 years, Robert Spaethling, her daughter, Christine McGurk and partner Gerry Robillard, her daughter Kimberly Ceccarelli and her husband Sandro Ceccarelli, her son Dominic Spaethling and his wife Robin Steele. She is also survived by her sister Myra Preston, as well as her loving grandchildren: Liam McGurk and Shannon McGurk, Lucy Ceccarelli and Dante Ceccarelli, and Marguerite Spaethling and Gabriella Spaethling. Danielle Marie de Fontaine Danielle Marie de Fontaine passed away unexpectedly on February 3, 2019, one day after her 81st birthday. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Didier de Fontaine, and their three sons, Stéphane, Michel, and André de Fontaine, their spouses and seven grandchildren. Her passing was marked by an outpouring of grief, admiration, and love from not only her family, but also from numerous friends in the Bay Area and in Europe. After her marriage, she and Didier traveled extensively and ended up in Berkeley where they lived for 39 years. Danielle became president of the Alliance Française of the East Bay and later formed her own organization, "Les Amis de la Culture Française." Danielle also was an active member of the UC Berkeley Section Club, eventually becoming its president. She will be dearly missed and remembered as a beautiful, gracious, and generous woman who enriched the lives of her family and friends.
