International House Times 17 LaRue Evans (IH 1965-66) turned 100 years old in May. She was a teacher on a fellowship when she came to I-House and became dear friends with Nancy Tivol (IH 1965-66). She has been a teacher, a historian, a leader, and a writer, both of books and for e Daily Reflector Newspaper. She has been honored as 2011 Winterville Citizen of the Year, had an award named after her, and received several fellowships. Graeme Orr (IH 1969-70) wanted to pay tribute to former I-House staff member Art Flores, "a lovely guy and friend to all. Art appeared as a 'villain' in I-House resident Louis Drouot's short movie Vicious Circle, shot around Berkeley. My old Plymouth Valiant car also starred!" I-House couple John Sharp (IH 1963-65) and Sara Sharp (IH 1963) write, "We are upping our usual donation to I-House this year given the horrendous news about the terrorist attack in New Zealand. We met in 1963 as residents of I-House, and we have been married since 1966. We are convinced that the mission of I-House is one of the best answers to such atrocities." Professor Noriko Matsui (IH 1968- 70) shared, "Long after my studies at Berkeley, I went to study in England, earning a Ph.D. at Bristol. ere, I met students with culturally different backgrounds and found myself enjoying communicating with them. For this, I feel I owe so much to my experience of international living at I-House, Berkeley. e mention of I-House also reminds me of Sunday Suppers. at memory warms my heart. I'm proud of the fact that I once lived in a place where the I-House movement has been carried on. I'm a senior Alumni News & Notes 1940s Jamshed Fozdar (IH 1946-48) and his wife Parvati Fozdar (IH 1946-47) graciously invited Board Member Eugene Yano to their home in Singapore while Eugene was traveling abroad this summer. Eugene enjoyed hearing Fozdar's I-House stories that occurred around the same time when Eugene's mother worked at I-House as the CFO. 1960s Jane Bowers (IH 1960-61 & 1964-66) writes, "I'm a Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I taught music history and literature there for several years. I also played flute in the university and community orchestras and in Shorewood, Wisconsin's summer concert band." Lynn Caporale (IH 1967-72) writes, "I organized and chaired a session at the 2019 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) entitled Historic Contributions to STEM of Families of Refugees and Immigrants to the U.S. and gave a talk entitled Family Origins of Nobel Laureates. Most U.S. Nobel Laureates are immigrants and refugees to the United States and children and grandchildren of immigrants and refugees." now, and am still teaching English at a private university which educates health professionals, i.e., nurses and physiotherapists." 1970s Bill Newell (IH 1970-71) writes, "I am a retired public high school teacher and active civil rights advocate." Christopher Barry (IH 1971) presented at e International Community for Maritime and Ocean Professionals Conference in Washington, D.C. His work on various processes of oceanic carbon sequestration, especially by enhancing existing biological pathways, may be a critcal step in preventing catastrophic climate change." Kathleen Riley (IH 1971-74) shares, "I'm working as a volunteer transcriber of Latin baptismal records from the 1780s in the archives of St. Augustine, Florida for the La Florida Project at University of South Florida, St. Petersburg under the direction of Prof. J. Michael Francis." Nancy Horn (IH 1972-73) earned a Ph.D. in anthropology in 1988 and is currently writing a book on epigenetics and family history. Lorraine Bleise Wardlaw (IH 1973-74) writes, "I retired in June of 2018 from being an elementary school teacher for 25 years. It was a wonderful career. I am thoroughly enjoying retirement in Mendocino, CA." Joan Fischer (IH 1979-1981) announces, "I recently took a position as a writer in Development and Alumni Relations at UC Davis."
