Participate in the Host Family Program

Residents and hosts mingling Every year, volunteers, alumni, staff, and friends sign up for our Host Family Program to occasionally host an I-House resident for a dinner, a mini trip, an evening of conversation, or a holiday event. The goal is to ease the international student’s transition to their surroundings and to help them understand the local community and way of life. Hosts offer so much more that can be shared: cultural revelations, new perspectives on life, surprises, fun, and friendship. The commitment is minimal but the rewards are great!

Resident Host receptionWhat Host Families see: Participating resident names are added to a map (by country) along with details about their interests and what they’re studying. Families can read about them and learn about the diversity represented at I-House this year.

What residents see: Families that have opted to share similar information are added by name to a spreadsheet with details about what their interests are, what fields they work in, and what they’re looking forward to this year for the residents to experience.

Matching: Residents and families will be able to match themselves up using this tool. In addition, they will be able to meet at I-House events including Global Homecoming on October 14th.

News from Joe Lurie (I-House executive director from 1988 to 2007)

The newly released, expanded edition of Joe Lurie’s Perception and Deception is a spirited exploration of cross-cultural miscommunications in an increasingly globalized, hyper-connecting world. With tweets and fake news rapidly crossing cultures without context, the expanded edition offers a timely, intriguing, and sometimes tragic array of intercultural encounters that have gone wrong across the globe because of the limitations of our respective cultural lenses.

There’s more than just a catchy and timely cover. Joe has added a fresh chapter, “Globalization and its Disconnects-Convergence Without Context,” focusing on spiraling misunderstandings across cultures, especially in the worlds of migration and refugees, religion, and technology.

To better cope with the disrupting forces of globalization, Joe has also added interactive activities at the end of each chapter (including the chapter about I-House). For more information, visit: www.PerceptionAndDeception.com
