Best Places to Study at I-House

Hello everyone! Midterm season is upon us, and with the steady accumulation of assignments comes the fast approach of deadlines. Even the word ‘midterms’ can bring a look of terror on any student’s face – just check out the UC Berkeley ‘Memes for Edgy Teens’ Facebook page to see the nihilistic sense of humor that I’m referring to. But, at the end of the day, we have to take these exams, and we have to try our best to do well. So, on that bright and cheery note, below are a few of my favorite places to study at I-House. 

  1. The library

Ah, of course! One of the many perks of living here at I-House is the beautiful, blissfully quiet library. Filled with sturdy tables and comfy chairs, the library is the perfect place to get some serious work done. Personally, I come here when I’m re-writing my notes and taking practice exams so that I can be as focused as possible.

2. The Great Hall

Sometimes, though, you want to study with friends who aren’t a part of I-House, or you simply want to hear some friendly chatter once in a while. At these times, I like to go to the Great Hall. The couches are large and perfect for relaxing as you do a run-through of your group presentation, and whenever I have to finish required readings, I enjoy curling up next to the fireplace. I know I’ve said this before, but I really feel like I’m in Hogwarts whenever I’m in the Great Hall.

3. The Cafe

As a resident, you get 250 cafe points per semester – enjoy them!

My go-to spot on the weekends, I like studying in the cafe because I can nurse an ice mocha for four hours without worrying about offending anyone. Also, the view of the Golden Gate bridge is breathtaking, so I always try to sit close to the large windows overlooking the street. I look forward to the day I have a college degree and steady income, so that I can live in a big city – honestly, a very inspirational daydream during exam week.

4. The laundry room

You know those days when you have a million and one things to do, and just looking at your three-page-long to-do list causes you to hyperventilate? Good times, am I right? 🙂 Anyways, the best way to finish is to start, and so when I have to multi-task between doing chores and studying, I’ll study down in the laundry room. This spot isn’t as well-frequented, but I consider it a hidden gem.

5. Your room

And, at the end of the day, you can always study in your room. I actually like doing this, because I can wear my pajamas and blast my music without headphones. Your room is a place that’s yours to enjoy and inhabit, so get some tea from the dining commons, plop yourself in front of your desk, and get to work.
